Pump Not Priming/Air Leaks?

Hi, new pool owner here. I have been watching your video's on youtube for about a year now. They are very informative and helpful, so thank you for that!

Anyways, I have been having issues with my pool since we bought our house 2 years ago, with water chemistry to equipment issues. So far, I have replaced the pool pump and the cleaner this year (2018). The pool pump is a Pentair 3 HP Intelliflo VSF Variable Speed and Flow Pump and the cleaner is a Hayward Aquanaut 400.

My questions:

First, I have noticed large air bubbles in my ~22,000 gallon pool when the pump initially starts up, following with smaller air bubbles. After a while they disappear, but occasionally you will see some. I have been told that this is a sign of an air leak. So far, I have replaced the Push/Pull valve with an all new kit. Where would I begin to detect if there is a leak?

Second, sometimes at the initial startup, my pump does not prime and reports an error after ~1min (see video). I notice water shooting into the pump basket, but not filling it at all. What could possibly by the issue here?

Again, I appreciate all your help and keep doing what you're doing!

  • Can someone help me figure out why my pool pump does not prime without me doing certain things. Before I explain, this is what my pool looks like: ~18k gallon pool and spa with Pro-logic system, T-Cell 15 chlorinator, variable speed pump, DE filter, solar heater and gas heater, Clear 03 water purifier (UV doesn’t work), muriatic acid feeder, and dedicated suction side automatic floor vacuum. In addition, there’s a separate single speed pump for the water features. These were all installed by previous owners and I'm new to owning a pool. The DE filter recently had a complete cleaning and backwash. The pump basket and skimmer basket are clear of debris. So my system is set to start circulation in the morning but when the pump goes on, it does not prime (there is no flow) and the DE filter pressure is near zero. In order to get it to prime, I have to switch the Pro-Logic setting to spa and open the air pressure release valve on the DE filter until water starts to spout. Then I close the release valve (with pressure about 12ps) and change the Pro-Logic setting back to pool. It works fine the rest of the day. But the problem is I have to do that manually every day. I suspect air may be getting into the system but I’m not sure where or if that’s even the problem. Please help. Thank you.
  • I am not a pool professional although I do a lot of the care for my inground spa. It is about 1100 gallons and has an integrated water fall feature. It is a salt system spa with Pentair equipment. I am trying to figure out how to handle the winter weather. We have had early freezing temps beginning last night here in colorado. As I was not sure what to do and it was a weekend(no spa guys in CO work on the weekend), I just turned left the spa and water feature turned on continuously for now--and will suck up the utility bills. There are separate pumps for the water feature and the spa as far as I can tell. The spa has two pumps--one for normal use and a second "super pump" for when we want more forceful therapeutic effect. We definitely want to use the spa all winter long. I am trying to figure out if I need to turn off the water feature and the "super pump" and winterize them- as well as how to handle the rest for all-winter use. The company that built the spa has been totally non-responsive since they got paid.
